Ah little Jesus

From the final Chorus of part 1 of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio come these tender words:

Ah little Jesus dear to my heart,
make for yourself a clean, soft bed,
to rest in the shrine of my heart
so that I may never forget you!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Prophecy of the Light

Isaiah 9:2

In our class we’ve been thinking about the light that shone into the darkness to bring hope and life. This theme of light will permeate all of our stories for the next few weeks. We’ve had some great reflections so far. One girl said that we are naturally attracted to light—it gets our attention—so all the light in the story of the birth of Jesus draws us to Him like it did the people who witnessed the events long ago. We talked about how if we were to make our entire classroom very dark and then light a candle our eyes would keep coming back, irresistibly, to the light of the candle.

Get to know a scripture

We’ve also started a long-term project called “Get to know a scripture.” Each child chose a scripture from a list I provided or chose one on their own. Over the next few weeks they’ve been challenged to uncover the meaning in the scripture and then express their findings in a personal way. For some it might mean memorizing the scripture and reciting it with a short talk about what it means. For others it might mean creating a piece of art that showcases the scripture, or even a song. It will be interesting to see what transpires. My husband and I have chosen a scripture too and will present our findings along with the children in January. In this way I hope the children will let the light of the scriptures shine in their hearts and minds.
